2023

Dear Neighbors                                                                                                                                Spring has arrived!    And with it fundraising for our lake’s treatments.

Treating and managing the lake has become challenging, and we need some new tools and information.

The wastewater study done last year identified antiquated septic systems as a major problem affecting our lake, and work is underway to secure funding to replace those systems.  An additional stress on the lake, 880 acres drain into it from surrounding roads.  No matter where you live in this community, you impact the lake (which is why regular septic pumping is so important.)

And then there’s the weather:  increasing periods of excessive rain, extreme heat, and drought -  all of it affecting our lake.

We’ve been lucky that, unlike lakes around us, we’ve not had toxic algae, and the lake hasn’t been covered in green duckweed all summer. But we’re starting to see unwanted issues crop up:  algae blooms, excessive weed growth, and expansion of mucky islands.  We need to have a better understanding of why these things are happening so we can counter them.

In short, we need a limnologist, someone who studies lakes and their ecosystems, and thanks to your contributions last year we were able to hire NorthEast Aquatic Research. Their study of the lake helped us a great deal, and this year we continue with AJ Reyes, the limnologist who did the fieldwork for us last year.

Our budget this year, including AJ’s services is $31,972.  This will cover regular weed treatments, muck island removals, beaver remediation, pre and post-season water monitoring, treatment oversight,  inspections, recommendations, and reports.   The budget is a bit more than last year as a result of higher labor and herbicide costs and the need for an additional early treatment permit.

We can’t do anything without you and are so grateful for your support.   Summer will be here before we know it.  Let’s get the lake ready for us!    Thank you!
